Explore the attractions around Dorset...

There is more to this part of Dorset than simply its glorious coast. There is spectacular walking, ancient castles, historic buildings, beautiful gardens, heritage railways, and of course fantastic Dorset country villages and pubs to visit.  Visit Abbotsbury - Britain's famous swannery, a lovely trip all year round, but with a seasonal programme the highlight of which is baby swan hatching in Spring. 'Next door' are the beautiful sub-tropical Abbotsbury Gardens. Travel to the 'ghost village' at Tyneham, in the beautiful Purbeck. Requisitioned by the army during World War II and never returned, this is now a fascinating ruin; the church and school have been restored to display the village's unusual history. Corfe Castle - one of England's most important ruined castles, is now owned by the National Trust and well worth a visit.

And if you love castles, then there are plenty of others -try Lulworth, Portland, Sherborne and Maiden (which is called a castle, but is actually the spectacular remains of iron age hill fort, the most important of its kind in Europe). There are National Trust properties and museums aplenty also, within a comfortable drive - here is just a selection: the Tank Museum at Bovington and the Fleet Air Museum at Yeovilton, the Tolpuddle Martyr's Museum, the homes of Thomas Hardy and Lawrence of Arabia, and the beautiful mansion and gardens at Kingston Lacy to name but a few.
